The Story Behind Doc
The Doc on Macarena exercising a set at Eldorado Polo Club in Indio.
Horses and dogs were the Doc’s first love. A lifelong horseman and horse trainer, the Doc has a deep interest in horse-human communication. He played polo for almost two decades and trained many of his own horses. In 1987 he was the producer for several television network shows featuring polo including the coverage of the US Open Polo Championship that was aired on Fox and nominated for an Emmy. Cognizant of the amazing healing power of horses, he has worked with a number of psychologists who use horses in the treatment of troubled and abused patients. He is presently at work exploring the use of horses in the treatment of post-traumatic stress.
Along the way Doc also owned and trained the number one field trial Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Surfbreaker's Captain Kidd, in 1984. He is a sometime duck hunter and avid fly fisherman.
In the days before satellite navigation he was a sought out long distance ocean racing navigator and logged tens of thousands of miles in Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific ocean races. Doc raced in the Newport to Bermuda Race, Southern Circuit, and countless races in the Med on such famous racing sailboats as BLACKFIN and WINDWARD PASSAGE as well as his own LUCKY PUFF and NATIVE SON.
Doc is a published author (a murder mystery called “SPIRIT RANCH”). He has completed his next book with JoAnn called OUTTAGAS AT THE END OF A LONG DIRT ROAD, Leaving Life With No Regrets. He says: "OUTTAGAS is a memoir/self-help book about our lives, the adventures we had, the obstacles we had to conquer and the lessons we learned along the way. It was a lot of fun to write."
The book has been called an indispensable handbook for readers who want to get the most out of their lives. A modern day ILLUSIONS. Also in the pipeline is another murder mystery that brings back Nicholas Morgan and the world of the desert.
He lives in the mountains of North County San Diego with his wife, JoAnn (CEO and owner of FoxxMD Evolutionary Skin Care), Sammy, their very wise black Lab, and several healing horses who are experts in non-verbal communication. And who have discovered that roping is a lot of fun.
If you're around him long enough you find out his musical tastes run the gamut from Country (Ian Tyson, Dave Stamey, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson) to bluegrass (lots of banjo) and opera (anything by Puccini). He thinks one of the best ways to spend a cold day after riding is cooking anything that requires garlic, having music on, and a glass of Sangiovese at hand. From time to time has even been known to pick up his treasured Gibson five string and hammer out a few licks.
